Week of April 30, 2018

Purple Curriculum Updates
Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
This week the students finished their assessments on Mon/Tues and then continued with Chapter 8 on basic geometry concepts - angles, types of triangles, lines etc. We will finish up chapter 8 and then wrap up chapter 9 before the end of the year.

Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
We began the week with a review day, and then took our Chapter 11 test on Tuesday. We then started a unit on probability. After looking at theoretical probability, we then explored experimental probability. We spent the rest of the week rolling dice, spinning spinners, and flipping coins.

Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
We finished reviewing for the end of the year assessment. Students had the opportunity to ask questions before taking the assessment on May 2nd. We spend the rest of the week reviewing the properties of angles and putting with golf balls.

Algebra I with Molly:
This week students learned to solve quadratic equations using the zero-product property, then by completing the square. We spent the rest of the week solving quadratic equations and using different methods accurately. We learned the quadratic formula. Students heard it sung to the rhyme Pop Goes the Weasel and other tunes to help them remember it accurately. They have now learned 5 ways to solve quadratic equations. By the end of the week, students learned to use the discriminant to find whether there are two, one, or no solutions to a quadratic equation.

Language Arts with Jared:
Students continued reading in "Hamlet," as well as watching clips of the film version of the play. We went outside and rehearsed our classroom versions a few times. Students should be working on memorizing their lines at home.

World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
We wrapped up our study of the Holocaust. Students had the chance to explore the small steps taken by Hitler to create an environment where hate was normalized. We shifted our focus to the United States and began to explore the effects of internment on Japanese Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Earth Science with Molly:
This week we focused on inside Earth. Students learned about Wegener’s theory of continental drift and did an activity matching continental edges and fossil sites to reform the land mass of long ago, Pangea. They also took a quiz on magnetism and the magnetic earth. At the end of the week, science classes focused on preparing food or shopping for food for the overnight field trip.

Art with Patti:
Students are given engagement grades for each class. As a reminder, students are informed about their work in different ways. They submit work/create an online portfolio, assignments and grades are sent home weekly through Google Classroom, they reflect on their art in both Artsonia and with Google Classroom. This is a great way to check in with students about grades and assignments.

Computer Lab with Lorraine:
The students this week in Purple Room were given extra time to work on their PADLET project and the due date is May 21st in time for conferences. Many are finished, but several are requiring more time.  This week the 6th graders will be starting a new project, in Google Slides.  It is going to be a TEXT adventure.  The students can also choose a topic of choice with instructor approval.  This project is due May 18th.  In 7th and 8th  grade students are working on their new project a Commercial.  This project is due May 18th.

P.E. and Health with Matt:

Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:
6th grade students made up 45 minutes of their missed long-science class from Friday. Coming up in life skills, we will continue our focus on changes during puberty.
This week 7th grade students made up their missed life skills class after finishing their science work early on Monday. They continued our focus on bullying and watched a documentary about a young man who struggled through high school trying to get help from parents and administration because he was being physically and emotionally abused by his peers. We had a productive discussion after the video. Next time, 7th will be focusing on cyber bullying and different forms of abuse of online use.

8th grade students reviewed our previous discussion about gender identity and sexual orientation, then watched a short video set at a school. The scenario used students and guidance counselors to work out issues. We will continue our focus on sexual orientation and watch a documentary about a student who was bullied, based on his sexual orientation.
