Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
This week we started reviewing decimals:place value, comparing and ordering them, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them. I have emphasized the importance of lining up the place values for addition and subtraction but based on homework, it looks like some of the students were making careless errors with subtraction. Another common mistake was not reading the directions of the problem fully. I am reiterating the importance of these habits, but if you are helping your student at home, please reinforce these. We will review Chapter 1 on Tuesday and Wednesday (9/5 and 9/6) and take the Chapter test on Thursday. I gave the students an optional chapter 1 review packet that they can work on sections as needed and we will use the packet for review in class as well. I also returned the checkpoint Quiz 1 - I hope your child shared it with you.
Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
This week we took our first quiz, and spent a lot of time
working on word problems and using the metric system. Students measured all
sorts of objects (including themselves) around the classroom, and then
converted the results into larger and smaller units. We then spent Thursday and
Friday looking at different types of word problems, and strategies on how to
approach solving each of them.
Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
This week, we continued to work our way through Chapter One by reviewing measures of central tendency, exponents, and properties of numbers. The students also had the opportunity to show what they knew about the first half of the chapter by completing their very first quiz. Please help your student remember to double check all math homework for those "careless errors" such as dropping negative signs and placing decimals in the correct locations. Our first test will be this coming Wednesday.
Algebra I with Molly:
We
continue to work through the first chapter of the book, which is review of
pre-Algebra concepts. We worked with both positive and negative number, and are
practicing using rules, definitions, and properties to “justify” the steps to
solving a problem. We have had multiple quizzes on the first several sections
of the book and students are working on revisions, if they needed to do any.
The students are doing a nice job showing their work and computing carefully.
Language Arts with Jared:
This week students continued reading the works of early
American poets, focusing on the poems of Sidney Lanier. Students also started
researching different styles of poetry, and next week will be instructing the
class in how to write a similar poem in their assigned style. We also began on
sentence analysis, focusing on identifying prepositional phrases (on which they’ll
have a quiz next week). On Friday students turned in their summer reading book
review.
World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
We continued our work with primary sources and historical thinking this week. This unit will provide a strong foundation as we move forward through history and engage with historical documents and other primary sources. The 6th graders had the opportunity to show what they know about the differences between primary and secondary sources while the 7th and 8th graders had the opportunity to use their historical thinking skills to complete a document analysis quiz. We will be working on these skills for the remainder of the year and students will see their abilities improve greatly!Next week, we will begin studying Reconstruction. Our focus will be on trying to understand how nations and people recover from war and how rebuilding a nation is a complex undertaking that affects different groups in different ways. Our Unit 1 Theme sheet is posted on Google Classroom.

Spanish with Corinne:
Sunshine Spanish
HS Spanish I, part II
Sunshine A
This week in Spanish students reviewed for and took a quiz
on the introductory chapter of the textbook (greetings and conversation, date
and time, numbers, classroom material, and the weather). Quizzes will be graded
and returned on Tuesday, and will be put in student portfolios.
Sunshine B
This week in Spanish we worked with the vocabulary from Chapter 5A, family members, and learned how to conjugate the irregular verb “tener” (to have). Students turned in a writing assignment on Friday describing their families, using the vocabulary and grammar from the week.

This week in Spanish we continued working with the
vocabulary in Chapter 5A, family and fiestas. Students learned about the
irregular verb “tener” (to have) and possessive adjectives (my, your, our,
etc.). We will have a test on Chapter 5A Tuesday September 12.
HS Spanish II, part I
This week in Spanish we continued working with the vocabulary
from Chapter 1A, school activities and school rules. We reviewed stem-changing
verbs and learned several new affirmative and negative words. Students
submitted their second writing assignment on Friday, describing their typical
day in school. We will have a test on Chapter 1A on Tuesday September 12.
HS Spanish II, part II
This week in Spanish we continued working with the
vocabulary in Chapter 4A, talking about childhood. We learned about the
imperfect tense, which is used to describe actions that happened repeatedly in
the past (i.e. I used to play with dolls. Yo jugaba con los muñecos). Students
were happy to learn that there are only three irregular verbs in the imperfect
tense: ir (to go), ser (to be), and ver (to see). On Friday students submitted
their second journal assignment, describing themselves as children. We will have
a test on Chapter 4A on Tuesday September 12.
Art with Patti:
Students had the opportunity to rotate through the screen
printing station to become experienced with the process of applying an image to
their shirt. Next week… purple tie dye! During the rotation time students have
also been finishing their self-portraits for their BNS Rainbow Reflection
books. They have been doing a nice job making observations about themselves and
using value. Students started thinking about the word “Art”, and how they can
design lettering on a page.

Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:
Students completed a learning styles inventory to better understand how
they prefer to learn. We will continue to explore multiple intelligences and
ways they can best learn and study. In the next weeks, 6th grade students will
learn about hormones, 7th grade students will discuss changes in your body
during puberty, such as perspiration, and 8th grade students will discuss
hygiene and acne.
