Week of February 19, 2018

Purple Curriculum Updates

Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
.This was a very short math week! In the three days that we met, we learned what integers are, and how to add and subtract positive and negative integers. This material was straightforward so we spent the extra class time reviewing concepts from previous chapters: multiplication and division with decimals, adding and subtracting fractions, converting between fraction/decimal/%, probability concepts especially setting up proportion equations and solving for unknowns, finding the % of a given number, place value concepts. I hope that with repeated periodic reinforcement, the end of year review will not feel overwhelming. The students had a chance to look at their graded chapter 10 test, however I am still waiting for students to complete the test and will return these back once I have graded all of them. I will be giving them the opportunity just for this test to make corrections for 50% credit back. 

Pre-Algebra II with Jared:

In math this week we finished off our section on area by looking at circles (both are of circles and circumference of circles). We then reviewed, and took a quiz on the first half of this chapter, focusing on the habit of writing down the equation for each problem, and showing the following steps. We ended the week by discussing square roots, the pythagorean theorem, and introducing some terms for discussing 3D objects.

Pre-Algebra III with Ann:

Algebra I with Molly:

We began Chapter 8 with a focus on exponents. Students reviewed basic operations with exponents and learned how to simplify bases with negative exponents. We will continue learning more operations with exponents through next week.

Language Arts with Jared:

Students worked a bit with their vocabulary words this week, in preparation for next week's vocab quiz. But they spent most of their time working in groups on their Picture Book projects. Students made progress in their final drafts, but due to concerns about NHD, we've pushed back the final draft deadline until after Spring Break.

World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:

Earth Science with Molly:

This week students played a space battleship review game to help them prepare for the test. During their second science class of this week, they took the test on the Universe unit. For this test, they were given a “scantron” sheet to fill out. They put answers on both the test and the scantron bubble sheet to get practice with this type of testing.

This week we continued to work with Chapter 3B, foods that are good for your health. Students reviewed and practiced new vocabulary and began learning the verb “ser” (to be). Ser is used for description of personality and characteristics, relationships, time, and permanent details. We will continue to work with ser and the food vocabulary next week.

This week we started Chapter 8A, going on vacation. We watched the vocabulary video and completed several activities to work on vocabulary memorization.

HS Spanish II, part II

This week students worked in class on their movie scripts and turned in a rough draft on Thursday the 22^nd. The final movie projects (taking the place of a Chapter 7A test) are due Friday March 2^nd.

Art with Patti:

Students are given engagement grades for each class. As a reminder, students are informed about their work in different ways. They submit work/create an online portfolio, assignments and grades are sent home weekly through Google Classroom, they reflect on their art in both Artsonia and with Google Classroom. This is a great way to check in with students about grades and assignments.

Sixth - Torn Paper Collage 2/20 & 2/21 - Students continued to fill areas of their collage with torn paper and finish working on them.  . Throwing on the wheel Students are rotating in pairs each art class to practice throwing on the wheel. They are exploring how to center the clay, open it up, and pull to create a cylinder. They also will use sculpting tools to finish the piece. Audrey, Solana, Grace and Sam worked on the wheel. Art Project: "Fun" Reflection For this project, students create an artwork based on the theme "fun". They are to use any medium that best fits the project, thinking about composition and creating a focal point. Foreground, Middleground, Background

Students sketched out and labeled a composition in their sketchbook some ways that artists show depth in a two-dimensional artwork. Students will complete a project that includes foreground, middleground, background, overlapping elements, and diminishing size.

Seventh - Cut Paper/Collage 2/20 - Students made design decisions about color and how to have their cut painted paper shapes contrast with the weaving background. 2/21 - Students added line using India ink to create detail and define edges of their cut paper shapes. Throwing on the wheel Students are rotating in pairs each art class to practice throwing on the wheel. They are exploring how to center the clay, open it up, and pull to create a cylinder. They also will use sculpting tools to finish the piece. Linden worked on the wheel. Self Guided Clay Project Students are using the skills and inspiration from the clay warm up trinket box they have completed. They are exploring other ways to use pinch, slab, coil, sculpting and joining clay pieces of their own design. Art Project: Using "Space" Students completed an art journal warm-up, which features positive and negative space. For this projects students will expand on the idea of using the element of art, space. How do artists create the look of depth, and add dimension on a two-dimensional surface? Students need to think about foreground/background, how to use value, how to use size, how does color change to show depth? What else can you think of?

Eighth - Complementary Paper Weaving 2/22 - The created a loom out of their doodled painted paper. 2/21 - Students chose the painted paper that would contrast the best with black ink. They used India ink to doodle on their chosen painted paper. Art Project: "My World" For this project students created an artwork based on the theme "My World". They are to use any medium that best fits the project, thinking about composition and creating a focal point. Art Project: All About Color  To further explore color (one of the elements of art) students will create a representational project where the composition includes all of the hues in the color wheel, plus neutrals, and black and white.

Computer Lab with Lorraine:

This week we only met once for class.
6th grade
Worked on their websites: There are websites about MEMES, dolphins, Cats, Art, Mario, and dogs. I will post some links later so you can view their sites.
7th grade
The Purple Room 7th graders were given back their links to work on it to make sure all parts of their websites worked. Next, students tried to unlock the locks to one of their class mate's Digital Breakout. The students took their first typing test for this trimester and set higher goals.
8th Grade

This week, the Digital Breakouts were due and students put finishing touches. On Monday, we will try to "Break out" a few of their classmates and start a new project. The students took their first typing test for this trimester and set higher goals.

This week 6^th & 8^th did not have life skills due to the Monday off. 7^th didn’t have life skills due to a field trip on Friday.
