Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
This week we finished up
Chapter 3. On Monday the students learned the distributive property. We spent the rest of the week reviewing for the test which
they took yesterday. I have graded their Chapter 3 test and was happy that for the most part they show a solid understanding of the material. Areas that they could use review for are decimal functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Many students still seem unclear on these operations and this results in computation errors. I will be handing out practice sheets as necessary to some of the students. Today the students enjoyed math game day. Next
week we will start chapter 4 on number theory and fractions. This chapter
has a lot of math vocabulary and we will develop ways for them to keep
it all straight.
Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
We began this week with a Jeopardy review game, and then took our Chapter 2 test on Tuesday. We then began discussing exponents and scientific notation. Students applied their knowledge of scientific notation to create a display of the solar system, converting giant numbers (planet diameter, distance from the sun), into scientific notation. We then discussed basic divisibility rules, and explored some new topics, such as negative exponents and weird divisibility rules for numbers like 11. On Friday we reviewed these skills on Ixl, in preparation for Tuesday's quiz.
Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
This week we focused on the slope and y intercept (y=mx+b) form of equations and using graphs to solve word problems.
The students struggled a bit on their quiz so we will spend a couple more days reviewing and take a (RE) Quiz next week. Graphing linear equations is a fundamental concept they will see again in the coming years so I want to make sure they are comfortable using this format before moving on.

Algebra I with Molly:
This week in Algebra, We finished the chapter with a focus on using data
to find the mean, median, mode, and range. They also learned to create and read
stem and leaf plots. We spent time reviewing the chapter and completed the
Chapter 2 test. We began a project about bicycle gears. They used the
transmission and bike travel equations to answer questions about the gears
ratios. They created some very nice looking posters explaining their work. We
began a new unit working with inequalities. So far we’ve reviewed solving for a
variable using addition and subtraction.
Language Arts with Jared:
We finished our unit on Poe by creating cartoons on his poem "Annabel Lee." We then discussed a few of Walt Whitman's poems. Students typed up and turned in the rough drafts of their own poems, which we'll start editing next week. We also took a quiz on our vocabulary unit, and are starting to prepare for a spelling quiz at the end of next week.
World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
This week we are focusing on the relationship between settlers, the United States Government, and the Native Americans on the Plains as the US continued to settle the west. Students have been working with primary sources representing multiple perspectives on the events leading up to the Dawes Act.
Students have also been working on their Admissions Game letters of recommendation. Some are finding it a bit tricky to "recommend" their chosen person as some are famous for some shady things! Please ask your student who they are researching!
The quiz on Westward Expansion (CH 19 in the text) will be next Wednesday.

Earth Science with Molly:
This week in science, students continue to try to prove and disprove
commonly held beliefs about what causes the seasons. We explored how the tilt
of the Earth’s axis affects the seasons using a model earth and sun. Students
simulated the tilt of Earth’s axis and monitored how the light shone on cities
at different latitudes. We were able to see and ended up having great
discussions about how this creates seasons in different hemispheres. Our final
investigation was to look at the intensity of sunlight at a summer, noontime
angle and compare the light to a winter noontime angle. 8th grade
students turned in their engineering design snack packaging lab report and took
an online quiz in Google Classroom. They completed the quiz form, submitted it,
then turned in the final diagram portion of the quiz. 6th & 7th
grade students learned about controlling variables in an experiment. Students
will have a quiz on scientific inquiry vocabulary terms next week. Both groups
turned in their three topic ideas for their science fair projects this week.
Spanish with Corinne:
Sunshine Spanish
HS Spanish I, part II
Sunshine A
This week in Spanish we continued to work with the new
vocabulary from Chapter 1B. Students learned about agreement of adjectives to
nouns, and also learned about definite and indefinite articles (the versus
a/an). These grammar points will help when learning about sentence structure in
Spanish. On Friday students turned in a “poema en diamante” about themselves. These
will be on display on the Spanish board in the elementary building next week.
Sunshine B
This week we finished our practice with “ser” and “estar” and learned two new verbs, “poder” (to be able) and “dormir” (to sleep). These are called stem-changing verbs, and they have a spelling change in almost every form. We will have a test on Chapter 6A on Tuesday October 10.

This week we finished our practice with “ser” and “estar”
and reviewed the other irregular verbs that we have learned in this chapter. We
practiced the vocabulary and students completed the end of chapter crossword
puzzle. We will have a test on Chapter 5B on Tuesday October 10.
HS Spanish II, part I
This week we learned how to use the verb “hacer” plus a time
expression to ask or to tell how long something has been going on, such as, cuánto
tiempo hace que juegas al ajedrez? (how long have you played chess?). We
reviewed the verbs “saber” and “conocer” and students completed the end of
chapter crossword puzzle. We will have a test on Chapter 1B on Tuesday October
10.
HS Spanish II, part II
This week we reviewed reflexive verbs from last year to
learn about using the imperfect tense to talk about reciprocal actions in the
past, for example, nos abrazábamos (we gave each other a hug). This is the last
use of the imperfect that we will learn in this chapter, and we reviewed the
reflexive verbs in the chapter vocabulary to practice. We will have a test on Chapter
4B on Tuesday October 10.
Art with Patti:
Sixth Grade: Finished two non-representational paintings in
their art journals by adding black and white elements to create a focal point.
They chose from chalk, pastel, India ink, paint, or charcoal. They also looked
at their paintings to see if they resembled any of the six types of
compositional layouts they have examples of in their journals and labeled them. Students also used class time to work on
their non-representational project, as well as were introduced to their next
project of a representational artwork about themselves that does not include a
self-portrait.
Seventh Grade: Explored watercolor in their journals. They
experimented with liquid watercolor to create a wet on wet background. They
used the pallet watercolors to paint dry on dry. They continued working on
their white chalk drawing project.
Eighth Grade: Added rhythm, movement, pattern, contrast, unity,
and emphasis to their Principles of Design sketch notes. They also continued
working on their charcoal drawing project.
Computer Lab with Lorraine:
Sixth, Seventh and Eighth grade
Students were given notes and an example to follow to create their own Google My Maps. The Google MyMaps is now fully-in integrated into Google Drive. These maps are not as limited as other software services. Students learned how to create a map and use the features on Google MyMaps. The students were able to:
- Choose different icons, colors and markers to your map.
- Insert images and videos into the their maps.
- Create multiple layers to better organize their places.
- Students will learn how to import and edit maps in bulk through the use of spreadsheets and data imports.
P.E. and Health with Matt:
Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:
This week all classes created bookmarks with personal study skills and
habits to try based on their own intelligence strengths. 6th grade
students began a focus on the endocrine system by watching an introductory
video. Next time, 6th grade students will continue studying hormones
and how they affect their bodies. 7th grade students did not have
class this week due to a speaker, but during their upcoming life skills
classes, 7th grade girls will watch the female version of a video
reviewing changes that occur during puberty. 8th grade students will
focus on reproductive organs.
Thank you from,
