Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
This week the students took a checkpoint quiz on Chapter 2 and then we finished up the chapter by looking at misleading data and graphs. We reviewed for the test and revisited review topics from chapter 1. The students took the test yesterday - I have graded them but will only return them on Monday. Key points that they need to pay attention to: using units (as applicable), evenly spacing their axes for graphs, including titles and labels for graphs and plots. Some students are confused by spreadsheets and I will review these with them. We spent some class time working on google sheets. This is a program they can play around with at home if they wish-it doesn't have the best graphing features, but the spreadsheets are user friendly and would help reinforce spreadsheet skills they will use in other subjects.
Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
This week we focused on equations, learning how to isolate
the variable by using inverse operations. We modeled a few problems with
M&Ms, before practiced “undoing” addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division. Our focus was on showing all of our steps in order to build good
problem-solving habits. On Thursday we took a short quiz on one-step equations,
before putting all of the skills together to solve multi-step equations. On
Friday we continued working on this, and practiced writing equations from word
problems.
Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
This week we focused on solving inequalities as well as writing algebraic equations and inequalities from word problems. Students had the opportunity to become experts on one type of problem and then practice using math terminology to help their group mates understand how to complete the problem. Students also participated in self selected extra practice exercises. The objective of this opportunity was to help build confidence in areas where students felt as though they needed more practice. Many of the students reached the CHALLENGE level during this activity!
The Chapter 2 Test began this morning. Students will be given time to finish on Monday as the required "checking" of solutions to inequality problems proved more time consuming than originally anticipated!
This class has really blossomed in the last few weeks. They have taken control of their learning and are beginning to recognize their mathematical strengths and weaknesses.

Algebra I with Molly:
This
week in Algebra, students learned to define one variable in terms of another in
an equation with two unknowns. They learned to write equations to solve for
consecutive integers, when they are given the sum of those integers. We have
embarked on what I like to refer to as the “classic algebra” problems. These
are problems of distance, rate, and time. We are taking them slowly and will
continue to learn how to solve these next week as well. Students have completed
any revisions to their Chapter 1 test, so these should be filed in portfolios
for your viewing.
Language Arts with Jared:
This week students wrapped up their discussion of the
Fireside Poets, by reading some poems by James Russell Lowell and Oliver
Wendell Holmes, Sr. We then started on the Transcendentalist poets, by
discussing the transcendentalism movement and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Students
continued writing their own poems, focusing on the villanelle style of poetry.
On Friday students took a vocabulary quiz.
World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
We wrapped up our study of Reconstruction this week with our very first test. We will begin Unit 2: State of the Nation next week. Students will receive a theme sheet highlighting the questions we will be exploring as well as the vocabulary we will be working with throughout the month of October as we study Westward Expansion, Immigration, and Industrialization at the turn of the 20th Century.
Students will also begin The Admissions Game. This project will highlight some of the individuals who made an impact in the changing United States between 1865 and 1900.

Earth Science with Molly:
In science this week, students graphed the number of day
light hours of different locations on different hemispheres around the globe. This
allowed them to notice patterns or long hours of light or short hours of light,
as well as equinox dates around the world.
6th & 7th grade students continue
to learn about scientific inquiry and measurement. They practiced taking
temperature with thermometers and adjusting water to a designated temperature.
8th grade
students evaluated their initial prototype test and redesigned a second
prototype for their snack packaging project. They completed order forms, built
their prototypes, and tested them by the end of the week. They wrote their
final evaluations of their prototypes and will complete a lab report next week.
Spanish with Corinne:
Sunshine Spanish
Sunshine A
This week students reviewed for and took a test on Chapter 1A,
talking about things you like to do. The tests will be graded and put in
portfolios next week.
Sunshine B
This week we began Chapter 6A, talking about items in the house. Students learned about making comparisons. We also worked with the verbs “ser” and “estar” (both mean to be) and when each should be used. We will continue to work with this grammar and vocabulary next week.

This week we began Chapter 5B, “vamos a un restaurante!”
(let’s go to a restaurant). We watched the vocabulary video, and did several
activities to practice with the new vocabulary. On Friday students enjoyed a Spanish
game day to review and practice verb conjugations.
HS Spanish II, part I
This week we began Chapter 1B, talking about extracurricular
activities. We did several activities to practice the vocabulary. We also
learned about comparisons for people and things when using an adjective, and
how to say “as much/as many”. On Friday students enjoyed a Spanish game day to
review and practice verb conjugations.
HS Spanish II, part II
This week we began Chapter 4B, talking about holidays and
favorite family celebrations. We did several activities to practice the
vocabulary. We also began studying the difference between the preterit and
imperfect “past” tenses. The imperfect tense is used to talk about what was
happening, and the preterit is used to talk about what happened (the
interrupting action). We will continue
to work on the uses of both tenses throughout this chapter and several other
chapters in order to help students feel comfortable identifying and using each
tense.
Art with Patti:
Sixth Grade Art: Shared their “Art” design journal pages
including the purpose/meaning of art. They also learned about the differences
between tempera and acrylic paint, and practiced ways to use masking in a
composition. In preparation for their non-objective artwork, students learned
about various types of compositions.
Seventh Grade: In their art journals, seventh grade artists explored
how to acquire a range in value using white chalk on black paper, as well as
using those values to create a sphere. Students have also chosen an image with
a range of values as a resource for their first project using the grid method.
Eighth Grade: Tested several types of charcoal pencils to use
for their charcoal drawing project. Students chose an image with a range of
values and good contrast to use as a resource for their artwork. We also
reviewed how to grid their image and project paper in order to scale their
drawing to a larger size.

art class! http://bnsartstudio.weebly.com/
The students are continuing to learn about new Technology gadgets. Using Google Slides and some are using MS PowerPoint. The students are adding these new computerize/technology components to a "3D type house". It has been really interesting and I have learned about some new technology. What has been most exciting is that the requirement is only 3 rooms with 15 technology gadgets along with 14 other items. The students have gone above the requirements and have been really creative and added more than 3 rooms. Check out the computer lab blog for more detail.
Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:
This week all classes compiled and graphed their learning strength on a
multiple intelligences survey. We discussed what each strength means as it
applies to their study skills. Following that 6th grade students
will begin studying hormones and how they affect their bodies. 7th
grade students did not have class this week due to a speaker, but during their
upcoming life skills classes, 7th grade girls will watch the female
version of a video reviewing changes that occur during puberty. 8th
grade students will focus on reproductive organs.
Thank you from,
