Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
We began the week by revising the customary system of measurements, and working on converting between different units. Then we looked a bit at precision. We reviewed the chapter on Tuesday, and took a chapter test on Thursday. On Friday we learned about the complicated origins of the customary system of measurements, before talking a bit about ratios.
Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
Algebra I with Molly:
We began this week by calculating the theoretical and experimental
probability of different events. They went on to calculate independent and
dependent probabilities. This completed the chapter, so we reviewed chapter 4
and took a test.
Language Arts with Jared:
In language arts, students continued working this week on typing their NaNoWriMo stories. Collectively, we've written over 150,000 words this month! Students have the option to continue writing their stories over fall break, but it is not required. We also began a new grammar unit, spending time learning about direct objects and helping verbs. After fall break, we will work on a project with their Fall Trimester outside reading book, which is to be finished being read by December 1st.
World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
This week, students in all grades learned about nativism through history. Partners each tackled a different era in history and created a poster using primary sources that showcased nativist sterotypes in the context of the time.
Students also continued to research for NHD.

Earth Science with Molly:
As part of our focus on the Sun, students learned about the
electromagnetic spectrum. This helped them to better understand the difference
between solar wind and solar flares. Students are turning in science fair
progress reports to help them stay focused and motivated on their projects. They
will have a test on the Earth, Sun, and Moon unit December 13th.
They received a study guide to use as a resource for studying.

Art with Patti:
A great way to see how your child is doing in art
is to check their Art Google Classroom with them at home. This is where students
receive grades and specific feedback about daily art engagement, art journal
assignments, and projects.
Sixth:
Art Journal -
Exploring Compositional Layout Students brainstormed objects they like to draw, writing as
many as they could think of. Then, they referenced their 6 compositional layout
designs and created two drawings using the same theme based on two different
compositions. This gave them practice in thinking about composition when
creating an artwork. Project: Symbolic
Portrait Think
about portraiture in an abstract way. What are likes, how time is spent,
favorite foods, hobbies, family representation, favorite places to visit,
personal beliefs, how you define yourself. Create an artwork that is a
representation of yourself, combine several visual illustrations to convey a
composition of imagery representing self without the focal point being a
self-portrait. Paint, collage, draw, text and lettering can be used to create
this work.
Seventh:
Art Journal:
Positive/Negative Space - Using pencil, divide the NEGATIVE space into 5 areas.
Choose three to add various patterns. Project: Chalk
Drawing Using Grid You
will create a drawing using white chalk on black paper. LIGHTLY draw a 2"
grid on your black 12 X 18" paper. Choose an image to print out in black
and white that has a range of values and shows contrast. Draw a 1" grid
(or adjust if necessary) on top of your image. Using pencil, LIGHTLY draw major
shapes you see in each square from your image onto your black paper. Move
square by square, checking where the shapes meet the edges of the squares to
scale correctly. Using white chalk, start filling in various values you see in
each square, reference the value scale you created in your art journal. Use a
viewfinder (a card cut with a hole that matches your image grid square) to help
you focus on small pieces of information. Art Project: Fun
Reflection For
this project students created an artwork based on the theme "fun".
They are to use any medium that best fits the project, thinking about composition
and creating a focal point.
Eighth:
Art Journal: Color
Theory Label
Primary, Secondary, and Intermediate (Tertiary) colors on spectrum color
painting. Art Journal: Linear Perspective Using a vanishing point, students
created a thumbnail sketch of an outdoor scene using one-point perspective and
one thumbnail sketch of an indoor room/hall using one-point perspective. 11/15 - Students set up an art journal
page with four thumbnail pages to explore linear perspective. Art Project:
"My World..." For this project students created an artwork based on the
theme "My World....". They are to use any medium that best fits the
project, thinking about composition and creating a focal point. Project: Charcoal
