Week of December 18, 2017

Purple Curriculum Updates
Pre-Algebra I with Seema:

This was a short week. We spent Monday and Tuesday preparing for the midterm test which the students took on Wednesday and finished off the semester with math game day on Thursday!

Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
We continued working with percents, and focused on how to find a given percent of a number. On Wednesday we took a quiz on the first half of chapter six. We rounded out the week with some fun review games, including the puzzling math game "24." We will be having a mid-year assessment on the Friday when we get back from winter break. I have told students that I am putting an optional review packet in their parent mailboxes.

Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
We continued working with percent- learning how to find percent by writing proportions as well as by writing equations. Students took a quiz on Wednesday and enjoyed Math Game Day with the Pre-Algebra I students on Thursday.

All students were given optional midterm review packets to aid in their studying. They should be able to complete all of the problems from chapters 1-5 and up to problem 18 on the chapter 6 review.

Algebra I with Molly:

The last week of the year in Algebra was spent on linear equations. Students learned how to write linear equations in the slope-intercept form from the y-intercept and the slope of a graph. Students learned to find the slope of a line, then labeled linear equations with the standard form and the point-slope form. Wednesday and Thursday were dedicated to students either taking the mid-year exam or creating a graphing project.

Language Arts with Jared:
Some students finished up their vocabulary quiz on Monday. In grammar, we spent some time looking at the differences between tricky pairs of verbs, such as lie/lay, raise/rise. In literature we wrapped up our novels on Friday (with a few classes needing to finish the final few pages on their own). I have encouraged students to use their winter break to make progress in a fun outside-of-class novel.

World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
Students continued exploring imperialism and the Spanish-American War- this week focusing on the effects of America winning the war and becoming a world power. We had some excellent conversations about colonialism and "consent of the governed" with regards to the Philippines. The 6th graders delved into the concept of benevolent assimilation and had a very thoughtful discussion on whether or not assimilation is ever benevolent.

All NHD outlines have been returned with comments. Students should feel free to continue their research over winter break focusing on the areas they were given in class.

Earth Science with Molly:

This week we continued to share science fair boards with peers and celebrated the end of the hard work on their projects. We began a focus on our solar system, learning about the inner planets. We also learned about the interesting changes that have evolved during the study of astronomy throughout history. We’ll continue a focus on the solar system after the winter break.

Art with Patti:

Students are given engagement grades for each class. As a reminder, students are informed about their work in different ways. They submit work/create an online portfolio, assignments and grades are sent home weekly through Google Classroom, they reflect on their art in both Artsonia and with Google Classroom. This is a great way to check in with students about grades and assignments.

12/20 - Students finished their pinch trinket box with lid, and turned them in for an art journal grade. The boxes were checked for consistency in wall thickness, slab lid with sculpted piece for handle, and a no slip element under the lid. 12/19 - Finishing: Students continued working on their pinch pot trinket boxes. They are attaching sculpted personalized pieces to lids, making sure they attach coil pieces to underneath the lids, and smoothing sides and edges. Audrey and Samantha were on the wheel.

12/20 - Students finished their slab trinket box with lid, and turned them in for an art journal grade. The boxes were checked for consistency in wall thickness, slab lid with sculpted piece for handle, and a no slip element under the lid. 12/19 - Finishing: Students continued working on clay slab boxes, smoothing edges, adding lip underneath lid to keep from slipping, and making sure handle is secure on lid. Linden and Carson were on the wheel.

Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:

This week 6th grade students focused on changing emotions during puberty and how to understand and acknowledge intense emotional reactions. Next time they will focus on puberty growth spurts. 7th grade students did not have Life Skills this week (no school Friday). Next time, they will continue to focus on peer pressure and move on to bullying. 8th grade students made up a history class they missed during science fair sharing last week. When we return Next time, the boys will discuss circumcision, self-exams, and identifying medical issues, before moving on to learn about feelings of attraction. Next time, girls will focus on the internal female reproductive organs.
