Psychology
We are wrapping up our study of personality by using the various theories we have discussed to analyze a character in a very famous documentary- "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Students were assigned a theory/theorist and asked to view the movie through the lens of that theory and a way to apply what they have learned.
Literary Magazine
Students continued to work on scanning artwork and pasting in stories and poems into the InDesign template. It looks like we did not meet our deadline, as the copies will be arriving during the summer.
Cooking (M)
The second half of Spring Trimester has flown by. The class voted to make lollipops and were amazed when they actually popped out of the molds. We also enjoyed making chocolate chip scones. We had a guest cook who made churros with an air fryer with the class. This was a bit hit. Then their talents were put to use in preparing food for the Purple Room camping trip... 14 pounds of meat were cooked as well as onions and mushrooms and of course 10+ pounds of pasta to go with it! We hope to wrap the class up with an ice cream making event.
This was a fun group! This trimester we enjoyed various musical board games, drawing games, and improv activities. The group also prepared a short skit to perform for their classmates. Thanks for a great trimester.
Typing
The typing elective expanded on learning to touch type. We used the programs, Dancing Mat and Typing. com. We did play one word game, as class competition. Finally students used Ztype, in a friendly typing game to see who could get the most keystrokes.
Red Room Learning Buddies
Learning buddy time coincides with afternoon center time. The Red Roomers love having the middle schoolers join them in their play. These learning buddies often help to extend the use of materials in ways the kids really benefit from (snap circuits, Lego, magnets, etc). Always a highlight of the week!
Handwriting
Graphic Design
During Intro to Graphic Design students learned about how graphic designers create an image for a business. Students sketched out ideas for a logo to represent a business they have created, or redesigned a logo that already exists. They have drawn an image to convert to digital art and use in their logo, and have learned some of the basic tools in Adobe Illustrator. They have combined text and an image to create a final logo.
Bucket Drumming
This group worked so hard this trimester. We read and played several pre-composed bucket drumming pieces that involved lots of various skills and techniques. With this knowledge the group also worked together to compose their own bucket drumming piece. Thanks for the great drumming!
Children's Garden
Children’s garden elective kids have been playing outside at recess, leading group games, and reading stories with our children.
Public Art
So far, the students have examined what is public art. They learned about the roll it plays in public spaces and how people interact with the objects. Since they will be participating in creating a public art piece for the NRV in a given format of a window pane; they have to decide as a group what to display and how it relates to the space it will be exhibited in. The show will be at Montgomery Museum sometime in June.
The students have brainstormed ideas about what is the NRV on a personal level, what objects to represent the NRV, and what materials to use such as painting, drawing, stencil or laser cutting to use on the window. There is still not a complete picture on what the final piece will be, hopefully in the next few weeks this will develop as they student begin to experience with ideas and materials, and begin to work on the window pane.
The stock market game elective is winding down. The student can continue to purchase stocks and some bonds throughout the second part of the trimester. Overall, the students have learn a lot about the basic terminology of investing.
The students teams did not win at the end of the game on April 20th, but their portfolio is beginning to shape up over time. Currently one team is in 93rd place out of 289 teams. The other two are in the top 200 ranking. Students have learned a lot and realize day to day evaluation of the market is important to grow their portfolio. In May, a guest speaker came and gave a few tips about market capitalization and some tips about investing. Just learning and talking with their families about investing in the stock market has been a highlight in our meetings.

Purple Curriculum Updates
Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
.Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
After all the assessments were concluded, we started and have now finished Chapter 8 on basic geometry skills. Included in this chapter are lines, complementary and supplementary angles, classifying triangles, other polygons, congruent and similar figures, lines of symmetry and different transformations.
We are currently completing chapter 9 and started with 9-7 on prism and pyramids. On Friday the students used nets of 3D shapes (cone, pentagonal pyramid, square pyramid, triangular pyramid, cylinder, triangular prism, cube and rectangular prism) and I asked them to derive the surface area of these 3D objects (except pentagonal pyramid) using all the information they have learned along the way. Cones are a bit more challenging and we will work through that derivation together on Monday. Overall, the students demonstrated very good retention and application of the material.
.Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
We spent the week reviewing for the end-of-year assessment. On Tuesday we reviewed Chapters 1-5, and on Wednesday we looked at Chapters 6-10. We then took our PA-2 end-of-year assessment on Thursday, followed by a skills-check of material that will be used next year in PA-3. I will be using the results of these assessments to send out individualized summer review packets.
Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
We have begun our final project- building a mini-golf course. Students were paired up and tasked with designing a hole for the class course. This project requires them to use their knowledge of angle measurement and geometry to design a hole that at least has the possibility for a hole in one! We also explored creating obstacles by building catapults and measuring the angles that best launched paper clips and cap erasers.

Language Arts with Jared:
We focused on our Shakespeare play this week. Students finished reading Act 3, and began Act 4 of the play. We practiced outside (when the weather allowed), and students started working on getting things ready for the play. 6th graders worked on making props, 7th graders worked on the sets, and 8th graders focused on costumes. Our class presentations of "Hamlet" will be on Thursday morning, May 31st.
World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
We continued our study of WWII this week by looking at propaganda. Students created propaganda posters or cartoons that are on display on the movable wall. We also learned about turning point battles in both theaters. The WWII test will be May 24th.

Seventh – Students are finishing their glazing project. They are also working finishing various projects. Some students have been exploring wire sculpture. To start getting ready for the end of year art show, students filled out their artist reflection.
Eighth – Students have filled out artist reflections in preparation of the end of year art show. They have prepared their chia planters with seeds to grow seeds. They are working on various sculpture projects and finishing two-dimensional art.
Computer Lab with Lorraine:
Sixth Grade- Students are working on a fun project either in Google Slides or MSPowerPoint. Some are doing a "text adventure" and others are working on a creative slide presentation. Some of the topics are: A Spooky Adventure and a Store Adventure.
Seventh and Eighth Grade students are working on their commercials using the software program Animoto. This project is to use features in MSPowerPoint, or Google Slides, then save the slides as a JPEG. Then upload these images to Animoto. Here are some of the products or services the students are selling. For example a mapping system, "Poshest" Lipstick, Diet Water, Facial Cream, Apples and Bananas (Anana) nutrition bar, Eccacala(Medicine that Cures Cat's Allergy) the "new" I-phone X and a specialty restaurant. We will be presenting these commercials in class either on Monday or next Friday.
