Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
We wrapped up review earlier in the week and the students completed their end of year PA1 assessment. I am happy to report that all students passed the assessment. Tomorrow the purple roomers will be leaving math early to go on a field trip, so I will start chapter 8 with the class and continue with assessments next Monday and Tuesday April 30th/May1st.
Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
We began the week with a presentation on misleading graphs. We then discussed inherent bias in questions, and how to get a representative sample of a population. We ended the week with a unit on estimating population size. We'll be reviewing, and taking our last chapter test on Tuesday. (our end-of-year assessment will be held *after* our overnight trip)
Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
We wrapped up our study of Chapter 12 by looking at adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials. We also reviewed for the end of the year test.

Algebra I with Molly:
At the beginning of the week, we reviewed computation with square roots.
Then we moved on to learning several ways to solve quadratic equations. They
graphed them, then solved some of the simple forms by solving for x to find the
x-intercepts. Later we moved on to solving by factoring.
Language Arts with Jared:
We spent the week discussing Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Students took turns reading aloud the various roles in the play, and we paused to discuss the terms/meaning/context of the text. We then alternated between watching a humorous newscaster-style video about the play and a movie adaption of the play. Students listed their preferences for the size of the role they'd like for the spring play, and their roles were then announced. On Fridays they got their scripts, and will be starting to memorize their lines.
World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
Earth Science with Molly:
This week we had a brief focus on water. Students learned that 75% of
the Earth’s surface is covered by Ocean and that there is only a very, very
small fraction of usable fresh water on or in the remaining portion of the surface,
which is largely land. Students watched a documentary about how water flows
through a karst region (think caves), which was set in Florida. By the end of
the week, we began a focus on the inside of the Earth, looking at the layers
from the crust to the core.
Spanish with Corinne:

Art with Patti:
Students
are given engagement grades for each class. As a reminder, students are
informed about their work in different ways. They submit work/create an online
portfolio, assignments and grades are sent home weekly through Google
Classroom, they reflect on their art in both Artsonia and with Google
Classroom. This is a great way to check in with students about grades and
assignments.
Sixth
- Weaving - Small
Woven Tote: Students explore fiber arts 4/24 - Students added two more
"wingspans" of yarn to their small totes. Foreground,
Middleground, Background Students will complete a project that
includes foreground, middleground, background, overlapping elements, and
diminishing size. Students are encouraged to BE CREATIVE with theme choice,
thinking beyond typical landscape. Art Project:
"Fun" Reflection For this project, students create an
artwork based on the theme "fun". They are to use any medium
that best fits the project, thinking about composition and creating a focal
point. Art Project:
Symbolic Portrait Think about portraiture in an abstract way.
What are likes, how time is spent, favorite foods, hobbies, family
representation, favorite places to visit, personal beliefs, how you define
yourself. Create an artwork that is a representation of yourself, combine
several visual illustrations to convey a composition of imagery representing
self without the focal point being a self-portrait. Paint, collage, draw, text
and lettering can be used to create this work. 4/25
– Tied their shirts for Tie Dye on Thursday. 4/26 – Dye day!
Seventh - Art Journal/Warm
Up - Clay Slab Trinket Box 4/24
- Students continued to glaze their ceramic pieces. Art Project:
Using "Space" Students completed an art journal
warm-up, which features positive and negative space. For this projects students
will expand on the idea of using
the element of art, space. How do artists create the look of depth, and add
dimension on a two-dimensional surface? Students need to think about
foreground/background, how to use value, how to use size, how does color change
to show depth? Art Project:

Computer Lab with Lorraine:
6th-grade students will continue to work on their projects and this is due at the end of class on Monday, April 27th.
7th-grade students will continue to work on their projects which are due at the end of class on Friday.
8th Grade students may need more time but have STARTED this project and it will have time to work on this on Monday due to not having class on Friday. Students are using Padlet to reflect on all of the different Computer Applications/Projects that we have covered so far this year. Using images and lots of text to write a positive comment about how they used these applications in class.
P.E. and Health with Matt:
Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:
This week 6th & 8th grade students learned
about our overnight field trip (7th did this during their
long-science when they finished early –They did not have life skills, due to
the musical field trip). We discussed the itinerary, camping arrangements, and
food. They had an opportunity to ask questions and fill out a survey about
their food preferences and needs, as well as their preferences for tenting
arrangements. Next time, students will focus on field trip preparations.
Thank you from,
The Purple Team
