Week of April 16, 2018

Purple Curriculum Updates
Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
We have spent another week reviewing for the end of year assessment which will be next Wednesday and Thursday. This week we focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, ratio/proportion, converting between decimals, fractions and percentages, calculating % of a given number and reviewing area/perimeter/circumference formulae. We are nearing the end (whew!) of our mammoth review and will spend the last few days on inequalities and Pythagoras' theorem. Essentially if the students have diligently worked through their review packet, they are ready for the assessment. Please take a look at the cumulative review quizzes 1 and 2 and help your child with any concepts they may need to review. Please also reiterate the importance of slowing down, showing and checking their work because I am seeing a number of careless errors.

Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
We started a new unit on different approaches to graphing data. We explored frequency plots, histographs, double-bar graphs, double-line graphs, Venn diagrams, box-and-whisker plots, and stem-and-leaf diagrams. Students worked on analyzing these types of graphs, and on creating them themselves. On Thursday we worked on making charts in order to solve logic puzzles. We'll be having a quiz on these graphs on Tuesday.

Pre-Algebra III with Ann:

Algebra I with Molly:
This week we began our study of Quadratic Equations and Functions. Students reviewed graphing quadratic functions using a table of values, then learned several steps to shorten the process of graphing, by finding the axis of symmetry and the vertex. After that they are able to find the y-intercept and an addition point before easily mirroring the points across the axis of symmetry.

Language Arts with Jared:
Students worked this week on last minute preparations for Authors' Tea. They then presented their stories on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday nights, and everyone did a wonderful job! We wrapped up our novel units with a book test on Witness (for the 6th and 7th graders), and an essay test on To Kill a Mockingbird (for the 8th graders). We then introduced our Shakespeare unit with a comparison between The Lion King and Hamlet, and a stick-figure summary of the plot. 7th and 8th graders began reading Act 1 together in class.

World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:

Earth Science with Molly:
This week we finished our focus on weather with some productive discussions about climate change. They took an online google classroom quiz on the water cycle terminology. Our focus has shifted to the magnetic field of the earth, which protects us from solar particles and allows us to navigate, among the many uses and effects of the magnetic field. Next week, there will be a weather unit test on Wednesday, April 25th.

Spanish with Corinne:
Sunshine Spanish
Sunshine A
This week we continued to work with the vocabulary in Chapter 4A, talking about what you are going to do (in the future). We also learned the conjugations of the irregular verb “ir” (to go). This is the last new thing we will learn this year, the rest of our time will be spent reviewing for the end of year test on Thursday and Friday May 3rd and 4th

Sunshine B
This week we continued to work with the vocabulary in Chapter 8B, volunteer work and helping your community. We also learned the conjugations of the irregular verb “decir” (to say, to tell) in the present tense. This is the last new thing we will learn this year, the rest of our time will be spent reviewing for the end of year test on Thursday and Friday May 3rd and 4th

HS Spanish I, part II

This week students reviewed for and took a test on Chapter 8A, going on vacation.  They also turned in their Kahoots quizzes that they created as part of our review for the end of year test. We played these quizzes in class and were able to discuss and review grammar concepts from the beginning of the year.

HS Spanish II, part I

This week students had two in class days to work on their “cuando era niƱo” projects. After that we began reviewing for the final exam using quizzes created on Kahoots to study vocabulary and grammar.

HS Spanish II, part II

This week students worked in class on their food projects and posters. Everyone is learning about the history of their dishes, as well as translating the recipe into Spanish. We also began reviewing for the end of year test on Thursday and Friday May 3rd and 4th. We reviewed preterite versus imperfect (the two past tenses) and did several online practice quizzes together.

Art with Patti:
Students are given engagement grades for each class. As a reminder, students are informed about their work in different ways. They submit work/create an online portfolio, assignments and grades are sent home weekly through Google Classroom, they reflect on their art in both Artsonia and with Google Classroom. This is a great way to check in with students about

Sixth - Weaving - Small Woven Tote: Students explore fiber arts 4/18 - Students added two more "wingspans" of yarn to their small totes. Foreground, Middleground, Background Students will complete a project that includes foreground, middleground, background, overlapping elements, and diminishing size. Students are encouraged to BE CREATIVE with theme choice, thinking beyond typical landscape. Art Project: "Fun" Reflection For this project, students create an artwork based on the theme "fun". They are to use any medium that best fits the project, thinking about composition and creating a focal point. Art Project: Symbolic Portrait Think about portraiture in an abstract way. What are likes, how time is spent, favorite foods, hobbies, family representation, favorite places to visit, personal beliefs, how you define yourself. Create an artwork that is a representation of yourself, combine several visual illustrations to convey a composition of imagery representing self without the focal point being a self-portrait. Paint, collage, draw, text and lettering can be used to create this work.

Seventh - Art Journal/Warm Up - Clay Slab Trinket Box 4/18 - Students chose colors and glazed their slab boxes and lids. They made sure to use three coats for an opaque glaze. Self Guided Clay Project Students are using the skills and inspiration from the clay trinket box they have completed. They are exploring other ways to use pinch, slab, coil, sculpting and joining clay pieces of their own design. Art Project: Using "Space" Students completed an art journal warm-up, which features positive and negative space. For this projects students will expand on the idea of using the element of art, space. How do artists create the look of depth, and add dimension on a two-dimensional surface? Students need to think about foreground/background, how to use value, how to use size, how does color change to show depth? Art Project: "Fun" Reflection For this project, students created an artwork based on the theme "fun". They are to use any medium that best fits the project, thinking about composition and creating a focal point.

Eighth - Romare Bearden: Collage 4/19 - Students arranged and glued their pieces together to create a collage.
4/18 - Students cut out drawings and painted papers into shapes. Art Journal/Warm Up - Clay Chia Planter with a slab tray 4/19 - Students added glaze to their trays and planters, being careful not to glaze the portion where chia seeds will grow. Art Project: "My World" For this project students created an artwork based on the theme "My World". They are to use any medium that best fits the project, thinking about composition and creating a focal point. Art Project: All About Color To further explore color (one of the elements of art) students will create a representational project where the composition includes all of the hues in the color wheel, plus neutrals, and black and white.

Computer Lab with Lorraine:
This week the students are continuing to work on their ThingLink projects in 6th and 7th grade.  (Due to the schedule this week, 8th grade students did not meet on Friday.)

7th-grade students will START a new project using a software program called Padlet.  This software program uses a virtual bulletin board, where students and teachers can collaborate, reflect, share links and pictures, in a secure location.  Students will use Padlet to reflect on all of the different Computer Applications/Projects that we have covered so far this year.   Using images and lots of text, students will write a positive comment about how they have used these applications in class.

P.E. and Health with Matt:

Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:
6th grade students listed what they consider to be the 5 most important things for a healthy growing body. After discussing these, they watched a video explaining important things like nutrition, sleep, mental health, exercise, and generally, keeping yourself safe. Next week, students will again split in gender groups to continue discussing the different aspects of growth and maturity during puberty.
7th grade students did not have Life Skills this week, due to the half-day. We will continue our focus on sexual orientation and watch a documentary about a student who was bullied, based on his sexual orientation.
8th grade students discussed what it means to be male or female, then learned more about gender identity. We then discussed sexual orientation and attraction. Next time, students will watch and discuss a video about sexual orientation.

Thank you from,
The Purple Team
