Week of October 23, 2017

Purple Curriculum Updates
Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
This was a short week for learning new material. We spent Monday and Tuesday covering least common denominator and used that to order fractions with different denominators. We also converted decimals to  fraction and vice versa and then compared decimals with fractions. After two comprehensive in class review days the students took their chapter 4 test today. Next week we will start with chapter 5 on adding and subtracting fractions.

Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
In Pre-Algebra II we wrapped up our unit by working on converting decimals to fractions (and back again), and by looking at how to compare and order rational numbers. We then focused on "How to Study for Math Tests," and took our chapter 3 test on Thursday. On Friday we began our new unit by looking at how to estimate answers that contain fractions, which we will use for double-checking our answers.

Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
The transformations projects turned out AMAZING! I am working on scanning the flip book pages so students may animate them on the computers if they wish!  Students also took their Chapter 3 test this week.  Corrections will be due next Friday. 

Towards the end of the week, we began Chapter 4- Real Numbers.  Students practiced prime factorization and finding the greatest common factor of different numbers.

Algebra I with Molly:
This week we learned to solve absolute value equations and inequalities, as well as applying them to real-world situations, such as acceptable limits in manufacturing. We reviewed Chapter 3 and took the test. 

Language Arts with Jared:
In language arts, we spent some time this week wrapping up our grammar unit on prepositions, and will start reviewing this unit next week. We continued reading and analyzing short stories, focusing on plot analysis. Sixth graders "Chivalry" by Neil Gaiman, seventh graders read "We Can Get them for you Wholesale" by Neil Gaiman, read Eighth graders read "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury. We then spent time brainstorming topics for NaNoWriMo

World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
This week we continued to focus on the growing American economy at the turn of the 20th century.  Students explored the different ways markets were consolidated in various industries.  We also began investigating labor unions and how worker's fought for rights during this time.

Earth Science with Molly:
This week in science, students acted out the counter-clockwise motions of the earth, moon, and sun relationships. They also modeled the different phases of the moon using ping pong balls around the orbit of the sun. They’ve turned research summaries in as well as bibliographies. The many small steps of science fair should help them feel more prepared when it comes time to conduct their experiment and write up the lab report in the coming weeks. There was no long science on Friday due to a Spanish movie and Messy Day.

This week students continued to work with the vocabulary and grammar in Chapter 2A, class schedules and classroom materials. On Friday students enjoyed a culture lesson on Día de los muertos, and then watched The Book of Life.

Sunshine B
This week students continued to work with the vocabulary and grammar in Chapter 6B, chores and parts of the house. We covered how to form affirmative, informal commands using the chores vocabulary. On Friday students enjoyed a culture lesson on Día de los muertos, and then watched The Book of Life.

HS Spanish I, part II

This week students continued to work with the vocabulary and grammar in Chapter 6A, items in a bedroom and technology. On Thursday students enjoyed a culture lesson on Día de los muertos, and then watched The Book of Life on Friday.

HS Spanish II, part I

This week students continued to work with the vocabulary and grammar in Chapter 2A, daily routines. We studied reflexive verbs and their unique conjugations. Students turned in a journal entry on their daily routines to practice with reflexive verbs. On Thursday students enjoyed a culture lesson on Día de los muertos, and then watched The Book of Life on Friday.

HS Spanish II, part II

This week students continued to work with the vocabulary and grammar in Chapter 5A, heroic acts. Students turned in a journal entry writing a news article on a heroic act to practice with the vocabulary. On Thursday students enjoyed a culture lesson on Día de los muertos, and then watched The Book of Life on Friday.

Art with Patti:
Sixth Grade: Art Journal: Turning in Students submitted several assignments: two non-representational paintings and the primary/secondary bottles watercolor that was created in their art journals.The projects they turned in are: Art Journal: Non-representational Art Comparing Tempera and Acrylic Paint This is a two page spread, using tempera and acrylic paint for a base. Students masked an area with tape, and explored the reaction of paint when it gets wet from another paint layer. Students created a texture with a non-traditional application (like corrugated cardboard, q-tips, bubble wrap). Students added pattern or created emphasis using black and/or white. Art Journal: Finishing up - Primary/Secondary watercolor bottles/vases Students used India ink to add line for definition.

Seventh Grade: Students submitted their watercolor techniques painting from their art journals. They also, Art Journal: Adding on - Salt Technique
On the 6 X 9 watercolor paper that students created an intermediate color, students added another layer using the salt technique.


Students practiced layering transparent shapes in their "transparency" section on their watercolor techniques spread. They also practiced "dry on dry" technique in that assigned section. Art Journal: Watercolor Artwork Using the 6 x 9" watercolor students started using the alcohol technique, they LIGHTLY drew a composition that has layers of depth.

Computer Lab with Lorraine:
This week in the Computer Lab, 8th grade students started their travel maps.  Some will be journeying across the world via Amelia Earhart's travel flight plans;  and some will be travelling the great plains via the Milwaukee Road: the last United States Transcontinental Railroad line. While others will be researching the great Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, the migration of the Monarch butterflies or the wildebeest migration in Africa. Others will research the great expansions in Norway or the westward expansion in the United States. The class did not meet on Friday, due to the the Spanish movie and Messy day.

The 6th and 7th grade students will start their industry country maps. Students started these on Monday and were beginning their research of the various industries in each country.


P.E. and Health with Matt: 

Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:
This week 6th grade students split into gender groups. The girls learned about and diagramed parts of the body that produce hormones for the endocrine system. The boys spent their time working independently on a handwriting packet. Next time, they will split by gender and watch a video about the top ten changes that happen during puberty. 7th grade students did not have life skills this week due to a Spanish movie in the morning. Next time they will split into gender groups and talk about the puberty growth spurt. 8th grade students were split into gender groups this week. Girls discussed breast anatomy, changes during puberty, and bras. Boys worked independently and read from a book 101 Things To Know About Being a Guy. The next topics for boys will be to learn about sperm production and ejaculation and girls will learn about female sexual anatomy.
