Week of December 4, 2017

Purple Curriculum Updates
Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
This week we finished up chapter 6 with a comparison of customary and metric units. We also studied conversions in the customary unit. As someone who grew up using the metric system and continued to use that in my former life as a scientist, this definitely was an example of all of us learning together. The students took their chapter test today. I will return the test to the students by Tuesday. Next week we will start chapter 7 on ratios, rates and proportion. We will be having a midterm assessment on Wednesday December 20th after three in class review days. This is mostly for me to judge how much they have retained from the earlier material and for them to review that material. It will count as a normal test grade.

Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
We spent the week looking at proportions in a variety of circumstances. We first looked at how to solve standard proportions through a variety of strategies (cross products, common multiples, simplification, etc.). Then we looked at how they could be used to find missing sides of similar figures. We then discussed scale drawings and maps. Students plotted out a fictitious cross-country road trip, and then produced a scale drawing of our classroom. On Friday we started reviewing for the chapter test on Tuesday.

Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
This week we used proportions to solve for various sides of triangles. Students were able to use that knowledge to solve real world problems.  We also discussed scale drawing and maps before moving on to trigonometric ratios.  The Chapter 5 test will be Wednesday.

Algebra I with Molly:
This week students worked on writing function rules from a set of data and to determine whether a function is a direction variation. We also learned to calculate the constant of variation in a set of data. They learned to find terms in an arithmetic sequence using an equation they derived from finding the common difference of a function. We completed chapter 5 on Friday, so they will review on Monday, then take a test on Tuesday next week.

Language Arts with Jared:
Students took a grammar quiz on helping verbs on Tuesday, and then began learning about irregular verbs. We also spent some time with our new vocabulary words. In our literature unit, we made progress in our novels (7th/8th graders are reading The Truth About Sparrows and 6th graders are reading No Promises in the Wind). Students also created a "book poem" based upon their Fall trimester outside reading book, and turned in their final draft in cursive.

World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
We spent the majority of the week working on NHD research and learning how to write thesis statements. Students also took notes on the Progressive Era and discussed the Progressive response to the Gilded Age. Next week, we will be exploring American imperialism overseas at the turn of the 20th century.

I had a chance this week to address immigration and nativist comments in a current context. All classes had a great discussion about what to do in situations where a friend might cross the line with a comment as well as how emulating what they see in the media is not always the best course of action. I reiterated the importance of creating an inclusive space and that comments that they may be hearing in the news with regards to different groups are not tolerated at BNS.

Spanish with Corinne:
Sunshine Spanish
Sunshine A
This week students continued to work with and learn the vocabulary in Chapter 2B. They also had several days to work on their posters and presentations for the Spring’s Noche cultural.

Sunshine B
This week students learned vocabulary to talk about places to go, and the conjugations of the verb “ir” (to go). We will continue to review this grammar and vocabulary next week, and students should be studying their old tests from this year at home to prepare for the midterm the following week.

HS Spanish I, part II

This week we finished learning the material in Chapter 6B, talking about parts of the house and chores. We learned the present progressive tense to talk about what someone is doing “right now”. We will continue to review this grammar and vocabulary next week, and students should be studying their old tests from this year at home to prepare for the midterm the following week.

HS Spanish II, part I

This week we finished learning the material in Chapter 2B, talking about shopping and discounts. We reviewed the preterite (past) tense endings and learned a new demonstrative adjective (that/those ones over there). We also had a short lesson on conversational Spanish, how to shorten questions and responses that would otherwise be repetitive by using adjectives as nouns. We will continue to review this grammar and vocabulary next week, and students should be studying their old tests from this year at home to prepare for the midterm the following week.

HS Spanish II, part II

This week we continued to work with the vocabulary in Chapter 5B and reviewed the preterite (past) tense and its irregular verbs before learning four new irregular verbs. We will continue to review this grammar and vocabulary next week, and students should be studying their old tests from this year at home to prepare for the midterm the following week.

Art with Patti:
Sixth: Art Journal/Warm Up - Clay Pinch Pot Trinket Box - Students formed a pinch pot, concentrating on consistency in thickness of walls. They formed their pots into a desired shape. They used their pot as a template to create slab lid. Students were introduced to the wheel with a demonstration. Students then continued working on a small sculptural piece, which will serve as a handle for their lid.

Seventh: Art Journal/Warm Up - Clay Slab Trinket Box - Students rolled slabs out of clay, concentrating on consistency in thickness of walls. They cut out a desired shape for their box. They used their pot as a template to create slab lid. Students were introduced to the wheel with a demonstration. Students then continued working on a small sculptural piece, which will serve as a handle for their lid.

Eighth - Art Journal/Warm Up - Clay Chia Planter with a slab tray - Students began rolling slabs to create a ceramic tray for their Chia planter. They also started attaching slab walls. Students were introduced to the wheel with a demonstration. Students then began working on a sculptural form for their Chia planter.

Computer Lab with Lorraine:

This week 6th-8th graders are learning about the great features of Google Sheets. This is so important because it will help students with graphing the data for their Science Fair projects. The students used several types of scenarios to create graphs for scientific data as well real-life data. For example, students were able to graph the results of the Great Elephant Census showing the decline of the African savanna elephant populations in surveyed countries. One of the most revealing graphs to the Purple Roomers is the amount of time teenagers spend on “activities” in a day. Students graphed this data in a pie chart using the number of hours they spent on an activity in 24 hour period. Some knew this would be a pie chart and while others recognized the ‘why’ certain charts are used for different types of data. Again, they seemed to enjoy graphing the "actual" number of hours they spent on a task. Using a pie chart, the students could actually see the percentage amount of time spent on tasks. Next week we will learn how to use different formulas in Google Sheets.

P.E. and Health with Matt:

Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:
6th grade students continued to learn how the adolescent brain develops and about how that affects decision-making skills as they mature. Next time, they will focus on emotional changes. 7th grade students continued our focused on self-esteem, but looked at how peers can influence us. Students discussed different tricky, risky, or illegal situations they might find themselves in as they mature. We discussed picking on other peers, stealing things, smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, or trying drugs. Each student came up with a flow chart of how they might deal with the situation, whether that is by taking a stand and trying to change it or by getting themselves safely out of the situation. We had some great discussions and will continue with a focus on peer pressure. This week 8th grade boys learned more about male reproductive organs, specifically about ejaculation (how, why, and when). Next time, the boys will discuss circumcision, self-exams, and identifying medical issues, before moving on to learn about feelings of attraction. The girls did an independent study hall. Next time, they will focus on the internal female reproductive organs.
