Week of March 12, 2018

Purple Curriculum Updates
Pre-Algebra I with Seema:
After the break, we continued our chapter on integers and spent some time reviewing. We worked on graphing real life scenarios of profit/loss using google sheets. Today we learned how to graph a straight line given the coordinates for the points on a line, and we learned what the slope of the line is and how to calculate it. I related the graph back to the equation for a straight line (y=mx + c) so they could relate slope and intercept from the graph back to the equation. On Wednesday, we celebrated pi day with some pie of course! We also learned about how the ancient mathematicians arrived on the value of pi, and how computers helped get even closer and closer to the final value. The students learned that pi is a transcendental number and makes an appearance in popular culture quite often as it is one of those numbers for which the fascination extends well beyond a few mathematicians! 

Pre-Algebra II with Jared:
This unit is focused on patterns. We began the week by looking at geometric and arithmetic sequences, identifying the rule for each sequence, and making conjectures about future numbers in the sequence. We also looked at patterns in tables, the precursor to next week's discussion on functions. We practiced both of these approaches on Friday, and will be taking a quiz on this on Tuesday. For Pi Day (3/14) students worked on calculating the value of pi for themselves, measuring the diameter and circumference of a number of circles. One group got really close, calculating it at 3.1414819 !

Pre-Algebra III with Ann:
We returned from break and began Chapter 9- Exploring Solids. Students worked to identify different types of 3-D object from 3-d and 2-d representations. Students also had the opportunity to explore drawing different views of solids on isometric dot paper and with a computer program. On March 14, we focused on Pi related activities and had a chance to sample some pies! Thanks to the students who brought in homemade pie treats!


Algebra I with Molly:
We returned from Spring Break with a celebration of Pi Day (yes, we ate pie!). Students turned in their pie recipes complete with equations for the ingredient amounts. We reviewed and applied their knowledge of exponents to exponential functions. They wrote rules for finding numbers in a geometric sequence, then graphed some exponential functions. By the end of the week we applied these to exponential growth and decay equations. We will review the chapter on Tuesday and take a test on Wednesday.

Language Arts with Jared:
We started this week with a new grammar unit (verb tenses) and a new vocabulary unit. Students also continued work on their group picture book projects, which are due next week. We also began discussing Authors' Tea projects, which will be due in mid-April. These will be short (2-3 pages) writing assignments, where students work on practicing a variety of writing skills. Sixth graders will be focusing on writing a piece focused on dialogue, and we'll start discussing next week how to properly format dialogue. Seventh graders are writing a highly descriptive vignette, focusing on a single scene. To that end, we have been reading sections of A House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros, which is written in this style. Eighth graders will be writing a piece focussing on interior monologue, and read a section of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

World Studies & U.S. History with Ann:
This week, we began work on NHD Annotated Bibliographies. Students are required to correctly cite each source they used to create their projects as well as write a few sentences explaining how each source was helpful. We also began our study of the Roaring 20s by looking at the politics of the time period- in particular, how the policies of the Presidents aided big business and consumer spending.


Earth Science with Molly:
This week we continued our focus on weather and climate. We learned about the different attributes of the layers of the atmosphere. By the end of the week, students watched demos and learned about three ways of heat transfer: convection, radiation, and conduction. Students will take a quiz on heat transfer next Wednesday.

HS Spanish II, part I

This week students worked on finishing their projects for our Noche cultural event on April 25th. Students who finished their projects before Friday were given extra practice packets to work on and to begin reviewing the grammar that we have covered this year in preparation for the end of year exam. I will attach copies of this packet to absentee sheets on Friday for any students who were absent. 

HS Spanish II, part II

On Tuesday students presented their Chapter 6B movie projects in class and they were wonderful and very creative! These will be graded as a test grade and returned to students next week. On Thursday and Friday students worked on finishing their projects for our Noche cultural event on April 25th.  These projects will be due at the end of class on Tuesday March 20th. 

Art with Patti:
Sixth - Atmospheric Perspective 3/14 - Students indicated depth in the mountain range by changing the intensity of color in each overlapping section. 3/13 - Students penciled a quick mountainscape composition Foreground, Middleground, Background Students will complete a project that includes foreground, middleground, background, overlapping elements, and diminishing size. Students are encouraged to BE CREATIVE with theme choice, thinking beyond typical landscape. Throwing on the wheel Students are rotating in pairs each art class to practice throwing on the wheel. They are exploring how to center the clay, open it up, and pull to create a cylinder. They also will use sculpting tools to finish the piece. Sam, Leighton, Solana and Abi worked on the wheel. Art Project: "Fun" Reflection For this project, students create an artwork based on the theme "fun". They are to use any medium that best fits the project, thinking about composition and creating a focal point.

Seventh - Positive and Negative Space Patterned Composition 3/13 - Students spent a final day finishing this art journal page. Self Guided Clay Project Students are using the skills and inspiration from the clay trinket box they have completed. They are exploring other ways to use pinch, slab, coil, sculpting and joining clay pieces of their own design. Art Project: Using "Space" Students completed an art journal warm-up, which features positive and negative space. For this projects students will expand on the idea of using the element of art, space. How do artists create the look of depth, and add dimension on a two-dimensional surface? Students need to think about foreground/background, how to use value, how to use size, how does color change to show depth? Art Project: "Fun" Reflection For this project students created an artwork based on the theme "fun". They are to use any medium that best fits the project, thinking about composition and creating a focal point.


Eighth - Complementary Paper Weaving 3/14 - Students spent a final day finishing weaving strips and adding dots of glue to secure the ends. Clay notes 3/15 - Students added notes about the stages and processes of clay. Art Project: "My World" For this project students created an artwork based on the theme "My World". They are to use any medium that best fits the project, thinking about composition and creating a focal point. Art Project: All About Color To further explore color (one of the elements of art) students will create a representational project where the composition includes all of the hues in the color wheel, plus neutrals, and black and white.

Computer Lab with Lorraine:
This week, we met for one day which was Friday.
In 6th grade, the students evaluated each others websites by leaving a positive comment or one improvement comment (if any) with their classmates.  Also students were instructed to BLOG one another on their websites.  This was for a class participation grade.

In the 7th grade, the students started a new "THINGLINK" project for their English class.  Students are creating an interactive Poster for their upcoming  novel, "The Witness."
8th grade, the students too are creating a THINGLINK project for their English class as well for their upcoming novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird".

Life Skills / Sex Ed with Molly:
Monday was a snow day, so 6th & 8th missed Life Skills. 7th missed long science on Monday’s snow day, so they made up some of the missed science during Life skills. In future classes, Next time 6th grade girls will focus on changes that occur during puberty, specifically, the height-growth spurt. 6th grade will also be talking about crushes and how to handle them in a way that considers others’ feelings. 8th will do a brief focus on social media and how it affects those who spend a lot of time and energy focusing on it, then in coming weeks we will focus on opposite gender reproductive parts. Next time 7th grade students will focus on internet bullying.
